The Old Fortress is a perfection of architecture and fortification art of the Byzantine and the Venetian period. It is an impressive castle built back to the 6th century. It’s ideal location offers to the visitor an excellent view of the city, its harbor, and over the sea to the mountains of Epirus. There is also a lighthouse that is to the top of the Old Fortress and offers a breath-taking view of the Old Town and the sea. During the first period of the Venetian occupation, they made works for the reinforcement of its Byzantine walls and construct the Contra Fossa moat, transforming the peninsula into an artificial island accessed only by a movable bridge. In more modern times it became well known as the classic site of romantic suicides. There, is also located the local Archaeological Service Ephorate, the General Archives of the Hellenic Republic, the Public Library, the Department of Music of the Ionian University, a local sailing club housed in the Fortress. In the fortress many cultural activities take part during the summer period.
