The Sanctuary of St.Michael of the Archangel is situated on a hill of Monte Sant’Angelo, in the provincial territory of Foggia, and since 2011 it has been included in the list of the Common Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO.
The Sanctuary was created in the cave where, in 490 b.C., Saint Michael Archangel appeared to a shepherd and since the Lombard period, during which it became the main religious site of the Western world, it has been one of the most important sacred places dedicated to the saint, in which every year millions of pilgrims go to. The complex of buildings which make it up, date back to different historical periods and are built around the natural cave where the 4 apparitions of St.Michael Archangel took place and where the statue of the Saint scuplted in the marble by Andrea Sansovino in 1507,  is housed, together with other religious works of art.
