The works for the construction of the cistern of the Saint Apostles, started in 1825 for facing the big scarcity of water on the island, were completed in 1846.  The decorative elements of the cistern of rain water, the pilasters for example, were later built in 1848 and the whole construction undoubtedly represents the most complex and impressive cistern built in Paxos, characterized by an elegant style, typical of the quality of the British works in the area. This monumental building has been under the protection of the Ministry of Culture since 1982.
