The Achilleion is one of the most beautiful landmarks in Corfu. It refers to a white Neoclassical villa built in 1890 exclusively for Elizabeth (Sissy), the Empress of Austria. The building stands majestic and imposing amid extensive gardens.The palace today offers the visitor the chance to see inside the refurbished rooms as well as the sculpture garden, including the noteworthy impressive sculpture of ‘Achilles Dying’ and the eight-meter high bronze ‘Achilles Victoriaous’.There are gardens, enriched with balustrades, a colonnade, fountains and Herter’s statues amid palms and trimmed cypress trees.The Palace is situated on a lush green hill near the village of Gastouri, some 8 km south of Corfu Town.
