At the time of Crusades and pilgrimages, the buildings imitating the holy places of Jerusalem were  widespread: who could not travel to the Holy Land, could ideally halt in a place resembling it, like the Temple of St.John, inspired from the Sacred Sepulchre of Christ. The portal with the prothyrum dates back to the 13th century, it is sculpted with vegetal motifs and scattered with phantastic creatures.

In the foundations large pieces of mosaic floorings dating back to Roman times, have been found. On the frescoed  walls there are later stratifications and different influences can be seen, with reproductions of saints and sacred scenes which can be only partially recognized.
